Transportation

Whether you travel by foot, by car, by bus or by bicycle, transportation concerns are always top of mind when shopping for property.  How will you get the kids to school, commute to work, or even get to the grocery store?  While your choices do affect Ottawa’s environment, most of all they impact on your valuable time.  Think this through carefully when considering your ideal location. transportation ottawa

  • For a map of city bike paths, designated road lanes and routes, the E-Map does it again.  The National Capital Commission has maps of bicycle pathways among its many maps and guides.  This year, the BIXI bike sharing program with 4 stations and 50 bicycles was piloted downtown.
  • If car pooling is an option, you may want to consider the city sponsored Ottawa Ride Match program which hooks passengers up with cars to cut down on traffic volume.  Or, if you only need a vehicle some of the time, consider the Vrtucar membership based car-sharing program with its sizeable fleet and convenient pick up locations across Ottawa.
  • If you are big on living a “walkable” life- with everything you need reachable by foot- check out walkscore.com, which features a Google map which shows walking distance to neighbourhood amenities, and provides a rating out of 100.
  • For everything you need to know about Ottawa’s bus system, see the OC Transpo site.  Searchable route information and travel times are available.
  • And, if you think you might want to maintain a night life, check out taxime.ca.  This nifty widget enables users to plot two addresses for an estimate on cab fare.
